Why Steel Drums Need a Dedicated Shredder

Standard 55-gallon (200-liter) steel drums are cylindrical, smooth-walled, and relatively light. Fed into a general-purpose shredder, they roll and bounce on flat cutting shafts without being gripped. The TG-DrumShred 60 solves this with hook-style cutting tools that catch the drum wall, fold it inward, and feed it into the shearing gap between two counter-rotating shafts. A hydraulic feed ram keeps the drum engaged with the shafts, preventing empty containers from bouncing away from the cutting tools.

The low-speed shearing action (25–35 RPM) minimizes spark generation compared to high-speed impact shredders, which matters when processing drums that may carry residual flammable vapor. However, this machine is not explosion-proof rated-drums must be properly emptied, vented, and certified residue-free before shredding.

Safety Requirements for Drum Processing

Processing empty steel drums involves hazards unique to containerized materials:

  • Hazardous content drums: Drums that contained flammable, toxic, or reactive substances must be thoroughly cleaned, rinsed, and certified residue-free by a qualified handler before shredding. The machine reduces mechanical size but does not neutralize chemical hazards.
  • Pressurized containers: Sealed drums or any pressurized vessel must not be fed into the shredder. Internal pressure can cause violent rupture when the shell is cut. All drums must be vented and open before processing.
  • Spark management: If processing drums that contained flammable materials, confirm vapor levels are below the lower explosive limit (LEL) before feeding. Equip the facility with appropriate gas detection and fire suppression systems.
The TG-DrumShred 60 is designed for empty, vented, non-pressurized steel drums and containers. It is not suitable for compressed gas cylinders, aerosol cans under pressure, or drums containing unreacted hazardous chemicals. Confirm your drum types and former contents with our engineering team before ordering.

What It Can and Cannot Process

AcceptedNot Accepted
55-gal (200L) steel drums, open-head and closed-headStainless steel drums >1.5 mm wallall
30-gal and 15-gal steel pailsCast iron containers
Steel IBC containers (plastic liner removed)Pressurized vessels of any kind
Steel buckets and tins up to 1 mm wallCompressed gas cylinders
Aluminum drums and containersAerosol cans under pressure

For plastic drums (HDPE), a different cutting tool profile may be needed to prevent material wrapping around the shafts. If you process both steel and plastic containers, discuss your requirements with our engineering team so the tool configuration is specified accordingly.

Volume Reduction and Downstream Integration

Shredding reduces drum volume by 70–85%, making transport to steel recycling facilities far more cost-effective than hauling intact empty drums. Non-metallic contaminants (plastic liners, rubber gaskets, bung caps, labels) pass through and are separated downstream. The discharge can be configured as open discharge or with an optional screen for particle size control. A discharge conveyor or downstream magnetic separation can be integrated on request.

Wear Parts and Support

Cutting tools are bolt-on, individually replaceable without shaft removal. The hydraulic ram uses a dedicated power pack with its own oil reservoir and filtration system. Our engineering team can configure tool profiles and hopper dimensions for non-standard container sizes. Each machine ships with a spare-parts kit; standard lead time for replacement wear parts is under 45 days. Installation supervision, operator training, and a 12-month warranty are included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the machine process drums that contained hazardous chemicals?
Only drums that have been thoroughly cleaned, rinsed, and certified residue-free by a qualified handler should be processed. The shredder reduces mechanical size but does not neutralize chemical hazards. Drums that contained flammable substances require vapor level verification below the LEL before processing. The machine is not explosion-proof rated.
How much volume reduction does shredding provide?
Shredding typically reduces drum volume by 70–85%, depending on drum gauge and whether the drum is fed intact or pre-crushed. This significantly lowers transport costs when shipping shredded steel to recycling facilities compared to transporting intact empty drums.
Can the TG-DrumShred 60 handle plastic drums?
The standard configuration is optimized for steel drums. Plastic drums (HDPE) may require a different cutting tool profile to prevent wrapping around the shafts. If you need to process both steel and plastic containers, discuss your requirements with our engineering team so the tool configuration is specified accordingly.
What is the PLC control system capable of?
The PLC manages ram stroke, shaft rotation, and automatic reverse on overload. Soft-start is standard. The control panel can be configured to CE or UL standards depending on your destination market. If a jam occurs, the shafts automatically reverse to clear the obstruction before resuming forward operation.

Request a Detailed Proposal

To prepare an accurate quotation, include your typical drum types and sizes, former contents (for safety assessment), estimated monthly volume, whether drums are pre-cleaned and certified, site power supply (50 Hz or 60 Hz), and any specific fire suppression or gas detection requirements for your facility. Mention whether you need the shredder integrated with a discharge conveyor or downstream magnetic separation.
