Heavy Twin-Shaft Throughput for White Goods and Mixed Scrap
Yards that receive whole washing machines, dryers, stoves, and mixed industrial scrap face a hard economic fact: the machine that can take an entire appliance in one pass usually costs several times more than one that cannot, and an under-dimensioned shredder turns every delivery day into a queue. The TG-MegaShred 1600 sits deliberately in the middle of this trade-off. With 2 x 400 kW geared motors, a 1,400 x 1,100 mm cutting chamber, and a rated 30 to 40 tons per hour, it takes whole small and mid-size appliances and bulky mixed scrap in one pass while keeping the capital cost and installed power of a full-scale plant line.
The engineering problem at this duty class is not raw force but torque delivery under shock load. One unshreddable hitch pin or counterweight in a load of white goods can stop an undersized machine dozens of times per shift. The TG-MegaShred 1600 addresses this with massive low-speed shafts, thick cutter discs, and a control system that manages reversals automatically instead of relying on an operator's reflexes.
Drive and Cutting System
Two counter-rotating shafts carry thick bolt-on cutter discs with spacers that set the output particle size. The shafts turn at low speed through heavy-duty gear reducers, so torque at the discs stays high even as cutter edges wear, and the machine keeps pulling down a full hopper instead of stalling at the top of the load. Auto-reverse logic senses overload, backs the shafts off, and re-engages at a different cutting angle.
- Thick bolt-on cutter discs: heavy sections resist breakage from unshreddable tramp metal, and each disc is individually replaceable, so one damaged disc does not take a shaft out of service.
- Split chamber access: the upper chamber opens hydraulically for cutter maintenance, cutting the time a crane and crew spend on routine tool changes.
- Hard-faced counter combs: replaceable combs between the discs hold the shearing clearance tight as the machine ages, protecting output size consistency.
- Auto-reverse with torque monitoring: the PLC tracks motor load per shaft and manages reversal without waiting for a thermal trip.

Where the Money Is Won or Lost
At 30 to 40 tons per hour, small per-ton differences decide the machine's payback. Whole-appliance feed removes the pre-cutting crew that smaller machines require; a single pass to a consistent output size keeps downstream magnetic separation and material handling predictable; and individual disc replacement spreads tooling cost across the machine's life instead of arriving as one large shaft rebuild. Installed power is a recurring cost as well as a purchase cost, so the low-speed drive is deliberately matched to shear the feedstock rather than to accelerate mass, which is where high-speed designs spend most of their energy.
Typical Applications
- Whole washing machines, dryers, and cooking appliances
- Mixed light ferrous scrap from municipal and industrial collection
- Aluminum die castings and light non-ferrous scrap
- Pre-shredding ahead of separation plants and downstream granulation
Before You Order
Confirm the largest uncut pieces in your feed, your hourly volume targets, and the electrical supply available at the site. Throughput figures are rated values for typical white goods and mixed scrap; heavier tramp content changes the duty cycle. Our engineers review your material list, propose the disc width and spacer configuration, and match infeed and discharge conveyors to the chamber before the machine is built.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it replace a car shredder?
No. Whole vehicle bodies are a duty class of their own; the TG-MegaShred 1600 is sized for whole appliances and bulky mixed scrap. See our vehicle body shredder for depolluted ELV hulks.
What happens when unshreddable tramp metal enters?
The shafts stop and reverse automatically on overload. Tough disc sections and individually bolted discs limit the damage to a serviceable event rather than a shaft failure.
How are wear parts managed?
Cutter discs, spacers, and combs are all individually replaceable. Discs can be rotated and re-sharpened before replacement, and chamber access is hydraulic for faster changes.
Can the output size be adjusted later?
Yes. Output particle size is set by disc width and spacer configuration, which can be changed on site to match new downstream equipment or contracts.
